A Visit from A Calendar Girl

We get lots of bookings over the telephone, via the internet through our online booking system and from brochures distributed all over the world and all of them have at least one reason to stick in our minds later, but some more than others and one of our latest guests more than many.

The story will be familiar to many who have seen the film or maybe the stageshow, Calendar Girls. It tells the story of a group of Women's Institute members who come together to support one of their own, Mrs Angela Baker who's husband, John, had been diagnosed with Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma and raise some funds for Leukaemia Research. The method decided upon for this venture was, at the time, seen to be somewhat unconventional for members of "The W.I" and with the help of one of the ladies husbands, Mr Terry Logan, a former professional photographer, a calendar of the 12 ladies, in tastefully posed nude shots, was put together. The rest is history and if you haven't seen the film or the show, we thoroughly recommend that you do. Although John did not survive his illness, his Calendar Girl's efforts were not in vain as the success of the first calendar has led to several repeat editions and further products added. At the last count over £3.5 million has been raised for the charity.

So, back to that booking. We had a lady reserve a room with us, a Mrs Angela Knowles, to attend a charity fund raising talk nearby and when we asked which one, she told us who she was. Mrs Angela Baker has re-married and is now Mrs Knowles. We have to say we have been lucky to meet very many nice people since we opened Tan yr Onnen but Angela is, without doubt, an inspirational lady and she and her fiends efforts deserve to be applauded.
